Sidney is from the Wulli
Wulli people of central Queensland. After graduating from the National
Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association College in 1991
he joined The Aboriginal Islander Dance Theatre and was appointed
to the role of Assistant Artistic Director.
Sidney was invited to
join Bangarra Dance Theatre in 1997 and performed major roles in
all of the company's productions from 1997 - 2011. He featured in
the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Arts Festival and the
opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Along with performances
with Opera Australia and the 2012 Sydney Festival's I am Eora,
he has undertaken extensive film and television work, including
Billie's Holiday, Fish (the film) and various commercials.
He has been nominated
for Best Male Dancer in both the Australian Dance Awards and the
Deadly Awards (National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander,
Music, Sport, Entertainment & Community Awards).
Sidney performed to critical
acclaim in Bangarra's collaboration with The Australian Ballet,
Gathering. This was Sidney's second collaboration with The
Australian Ballet, he danced in Rites in Australia (1997)
and in the tour of the production to the United States (1999), Paris
and London (2008).
In 2010, he appeared
as a guest artist in Classico Italiano in Milan, in a program
of the world's foremost classical and contemporary dancers.
Sidney has performed and taught extensively
throughout Australia and in Asia, North and South America, Europe,
South Africa and the Pacific Islands.
