A DAY WITH STEPHANIE LAKE.
The day gave participants an introduction to the signature choreographic style of Stephanie Lake. The workshop consisted of an advanced level contemporary technique class followed by a choreographic workshop. Working instinctively and playfully alongside an intricate, disciplined approach to dance making, participants worked with improvisation and rigour with an emphasis on the joy found in the creative process.

Stephanie Lake is a multi award-winning choreographer and dancer and artistic director of Stephanie Lake Company based in Melbourne. Born in Canada and raised there and in Tasmania, she is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts and went on to dance for leading Australian dance companies Chunky Move (under Gideon Obarzanek and Anouk Van Djik), Lucy Guerin Inc and BalletLab, touring and performing for nearly twenty years.
Her major choreographic works for SLC include Pile of Bones, Double Blind, A Small Prometheus and DUAL and have been presented by Sydney Festival, Melbourne Festival, Dance Massive, Sydney Opera House, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Dublin Dance Festival, Tramway (Glasgow), Aarhus Festival (Denmark), Theatre National de Chaillot (Paris), Theater im Pfalzbau (Germany) and M1 Contact Festival (Singapore) among many others. Stephanie’s commissions include Sydney Dance Company (Dream Lucid and Elektra with the Sydney Symphony), Chunky Move (AORTA, Mix Tape), Dancenorth (If Never Was Now), Tasdance (The Howl), Frontier Danceland (Singapore) and most recently Queensland Ballet (Chameleon), Expressions Dance Company (Ceremony) and New Zealand Dance Company.
Stephanie has received the Helpmann Award (2014), Green Room Award (2011) and Australian Dance Award (2014) for Best Choreography and in 2013 was appointed inaugural Resident Director of Lucy Guerin Inc which included working as Guerin’s choreographic assistant at Lyon Opera Ballet. Stephanie was the inaugural recipient of the Dame Peggy Van Praagh Choreographic Fellowship in 2012 and received a coveted Sidney Myer Fellowship in 2013. She is the recipient of the Australia Council Fellowship for Dance for 2018/2019.
Stephanie regularly collaborates with artists across disciplines including audio-visual artist Robin Fox, theatre directors Matthew Lutton (Malthouse Theatre) and Leticia Ceceres (MTC), visual artist David Rosetsky, film director Natasha Pincus (Missy Higgins Unashamed Desire) and film & TV (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Molly, Guilty). Stephanie has directed many large scale public works involving over 1000 participants, she is a guest lecturer at the VCA and has led master classes around the world. She is the Patron of Tasmania’s MOVES Festival and currently sits on the VCA Advisory Board.
