divining
2000
"I know the music of Scriabin well
and it was suggested that I use it for a piece. The idea of collaborating
with a pianist, to have live music accompanying a piece, was something
that really appealed to me and I knew it was a challenge I simply
had to take on.
For me music is magic
- truly magical - and it's a journey. We took this performance from
a completely different approach to the normal process. Usually the
lighting is done last, but this time we did it first.
It's a very personal
piece, a very intimate work.....revealing. It's almost autobiographical
- it's about the dancers, their personalities, their history. The
choreography has so many personal touches. It moves from a very
dark, almost satanic place towards the light and towards ecstacy.
While I was creating this piece I thought this is unfashionable
but this is the way to go.
To me, Divining
is loaded. It's passionate.
The piece in a way is ......fulfilled"
